Ickle Pickles Launches New Online Support Group for NICU Dads in Pembury
Peer Support
In an initiative to provide support and connection, Ickle Pickles has launched a new online support group specifically for NICU dads. The journey through the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can be an emotional rollercoaster. This pilot project creates a safe space for fathers in Pembury navigating the emotional rollercoaster of the neonatal intensive care unit, with the hopes of rolling it out further when possible.
A Collaborative Effort
The inception of this support group is the result of a collaboration between Ickle Pickles and a dedicated Pembury neonatal dad, Tom Gaunt. Together, they have recognised the unique challenges faced by fathers with children in the NICU and have set out to provide a platform for camaraderie, understanding, and support.
Welcome to OtherNICUDads!
The online support group, named "otherNICUdads," is hosted on WhatsApp, a familiar and easy-to-use platform for many. It offers a local community for dads who have experienced, or are currently experiencing, life in a neonatal ward. Whether you're still navigating the NICU journey or have moved beyond it, this group welcomes you with open arms.
Objectives of the Support Group
The group is built on several core objectives designed to foster a supportive environment:
Connect Locally: Facilitate connections between dads who "get it" and understand the unique NICU experience.
Story and Perspective Sharing: Encourage the exchange of stories and perspectives without judgement, allowing for mutual understanding and support.
Sharing Practical Tips: Provide a platform to share practical advice and tips on NICU life, from parking and coffee to food and sleep.
Guidance and Signposting: Help each other by pointing out resources and directions that may be beneficial.
Offline Meetings: Encourage members to meet in person for coffee, at the pub, or during soft play sessions to enhance the sense of community.
Support Through Similar Experiences: Be there for one another at different stages of the NICU journey—whether it’s yesterday, today, or tomorrow.
To ensure the group remains a supportive and positive space, a few gentle guidelines have been established:
Respect & Kindness: Encourage open sharing while respecting that each dad's experience is unique.
Confidentiality: Ensure that what is shared in the group stays within the group unless explicit permission is given to share it elsewhere.
No Pressure: Participation is flexible; members can be as active or reserved as they choose.
Not Medical Advice: While experiences can be shared, medical concerns should always be directed to healthcare professionals.
Practical Support & Meet-Ups: Focus on supporting each other rather than providing professional counselling.
