My Journey Through NICU

The Ickle Pickle who started it all

I’m Rachael Marsh, a proud mother of two wonderful boys, Charlie and Thomas. I also have the privilege of being a co-founder of the Ickle Pickles Children’s Charity. I’d like to share a personal journey that has profoundly shaped my life and inspired the birth of our charity.

The Unexpected Arrival of Charlie

Our NICU story begins with the birth of our first son, Charlie, in March 2008. I found myself in premature labour at just 28 weeks and 2 days. It was the middle of the night, and my husband, Andy, and I were unsure of what was happening. The hospital initially suspected Braxton Hicks contractions, but a gut feeling told me otherwise. Thankfully, my instincts proved right, as further examination revealed I was already 5cm dilated and in active labour.

The situation quickly became critical. After five hours, Charlie was born naturally but was not breathing. He was resuscitated and whisked away to the neonatal unit, leaving Andy and I overwhelmed with emotions.

Charlie was born at 28 weeks and 2 days (12 weeks before his due date), weighing just 2lb 4 oz – as much as a 1kg bag of sugar.

Navigating Life in the NICU

The neonatal care team was nothing short of amazing. Seeing my son in his incubator for the first time, so tiny and fragile, was both heart-wrenching and awe-inspiring. Initially, I felt detached, unsure of how to connect with him. But on the third day, everything changed when I held him skin-to-skin. The bond was instant and powerful, a primal connection that reassured both of us.

One of his nurses called him her ‘Ickle Pickle’ until he was named Charlie when he opened his eyes for the first time after 13 days.

Each day in the NICU was a rollercoaster. Charlie faced challenges, including brain bleeds, but he fought through them with incredible resilience. After 86 days, we finally brought him home.

The Long Road of Growth and Development

Charlie’s early arrival brought with it ongoing challenges. As he grew, we noticed he needed more support than his peers, especially in school. Yet, with determination and the right support, Charlie has achieved incredible milestones. He passed all nine of his GCSEs in 2024 and is now thriving in a Vocal Performance course at Music College. His journey reminds me every day of the strength and potential within every neonatal baby.
The emotional impact of Charlie’s early birth has stayed with me. There were feelings of guilt, wondering if my body had somehow let him down. But founding the Ickle Pickles Charity became a way to channel those emotions into something positive, giving back to the neonatal unit that saved Charlie and many more.

Together with my husband Andy, we founded the Ickle Pickles Children’s Charity and to date have purchased over 900 pieces of equipment for neonatal units and transport services around the country. This number grows year after year.

Supporting Other NICU Families

At Ickle Pickles, we recognise the mental health impact of NICU experiences on parents. We are committed to providing peer support and resources to help families navigate this challenging journey. Every baby progresses at their own pace, and we urge parents not to compare but to celebrate each unique path.

Moving Forward and Giving Back

Since 2009, Ickle Pickles has raised over £4 million for neonatal care equipment, supporting over 50 hospitals across England and Wales. Our mission is to ensure every newborn has a fighting chance, just like Charlie did.

If you are on a similar journey, my advice is to take each day as it comes. Celebrate small victories, reach out for help, and know that you are not alone. Your baby is a warrior, and with support, they will thrive.

For more information or to get involved, please get in touch. We are always looking for parents and families to join us in making a difference. Everyone can become a NeoHero at their local neonatal unit to help us give back.

Together, we can give every Ickle Pickle the chance they deserve.
